Back to School Style for Grown-Ups
The hot hot summer has begun to cool and soon it’s time for back to school.
Since I’m not a teacher and no longer a student, and since my son is still in diapers, I can think about the first day of school without panic. (Though I do still have that recurring dream about not knowing where any of my classes are…) Memories of the first day of school are heavy with nostalgia for me and, I imagine, for many of you. I was a nerd kid, and I used to lay out all of my school supplies on the carpet just to look at them in the weeks before the first day of school.
Those college-ruled notebooks—never wide-ruled; the wide-ruled ones were for babies—seemed so full of possibility, with all their blank pages. I would organize rows of markers by color, maybe the smelly Mr. Sketch kind if the teacher allowed it. I’d tap at the buttons of my slick new calculator, which I would never use to spell the word “boobs” out of sixes, zeroes, and fives.
I won’t be headed to a classroom after Labor Day, like so many family members and teacher friends will be doing. But I can still embrace my inner geek with snippets of back-to-school style.

That same dream haunts me: I’ve never been to class, I have to take an exam, I don’t even know where the classroom is … what is up with that?? Maybe a sign of stress?
Cute cup.
